Introduction to the Best Waterproof Walkie Talkies

Staying in touch with your family or friends during water-based outdoor activities is very important, and this can only be achieved with the help of the best waterproof walkie talkies. There are four main reasons to take this type of device with you:

  1. First and foremost: safety – being able to communicate if you get lost or are in danger is vital.
  2. Often you will find yourselves in places where there is no, or limited, mobile phone signal. So, unless you have a satellite phone, you’ll need a 2-way radio or walkie talkie.
  3. You’ll also need a rugged and weatherproof device. Today’s mobile phones are much more delicate and not built to withstand adverse conditions.
  4. Cost – a flagship mobile phone or satellite phone could be at 10 times more expensive!

Frequently, consumer electronics devices are rated for protection – this is often referred to as Ingress Protection (IP). The rating code is indicated by two digits (or X if not rated). The first digit indicates protection against solids (e.g. dust) and the second digit protection from liquids. We’ve provided the manufacturers IP rating for each of the walkie talkies on review, and a simple definition based on the IP standard.

There are many durable and affordable waterproof radios available today – and many factors to consider when buying a waterproof walkie talkie, so choosing the right handset can be difficult. Our guide contains some of the best products available, and features to look out for, when looking to buy the best waterproof walkie talkies.

Buying Guide for the Best Waterproof Walkie Talkies

Deciding on the right waterproof walkie talkie to buy can be an arduous task, especially if you don’t know what to expect or the right features to look out for. With so many products available, the wrong choice will leave you regretting your decision.

With this in mind, here are some of the most important things to look out for when buying the best waterproof walkie talkies:

Ease of Use

A walkie talkie should be easy to use, remember that it is to be used for outdoor activities, and not for professional purposes. Therefore, the ease of use should be one of the first features to look out for when researching your purchase. Some professional units can be complex to use and master, not easy to operate in the outdoors.

Battery Life, and Type

The type of battery, as well as the battery life of the walkie talkie, is another important factor to look out for. Most walkie talkies currently use lithium polymer batteries because they are easy to charge and offer great life span. This also makes them ideal for short trips and eliminates the need to constantly buy new batteries. There are also other versions of handsets that use disposable alkaline batteries.

Waterproof

This is one of the most important features to look out for in a walkie talkie. You should consider getting another device if your current handsets are not sufficiently IP (Ingress Protection) rated. The main reason why this feature is important is because of the flexibility it provides, giving users the ability to use it under any weather conditions and not have to worry about it getting damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the frequently asked questions:

  1. Are walkie talkies truly waterproof? Walkie talkies are generally built to be rugged and withstand harsh or adverse conditions. However, it’s important to note that not every walkie talkie is effectively waterproofed. There are some that are specifically built with an IP67 rating standard to make them waterproof.
  2. Can the signals from walkie talkies be traced? Two-way radios are generally difficult to trace. This is the main reason why it is often used by the armed forces, hunters, event managers, security forces and police. It offers different channels, which further reduces interference and prevents it from being easily traced. Many devices also have privacy codes for each channel – further improving secure communications.
  3. Can the signals from walkie talkie travel through walls? UHF radios generally work at frequencies between 400 to 512 MHz, but there are some VHF radios that are more versatile with the ability to pass through walls. It is important to note that UHFs use shorter waves and are usually preferred because they can pass through interference. Another thing to note is that VHF and UHF radios are not compatible with each other.
  4. What waterproof walkie talkie is the best? As highlighted above, there are several features to look out for in a walkie talkie, and as such, choosing a product as best will depend on features you place more priority on. Best Walkie Talkies for Skiing

Skiers on a mountain

Introduction

If you’re a frequent skier like me, then having the best walkie talkies for skiing to ensure you can communicate with other members of your family or friends will be essential. With the reception of mobile phone services quite spotty/non-existent on mountain tops, unless you’re using a satellite phone, radios/walkie talkies are the best way to communicate with others. Radios are two-way devices that allow you to communicate with other people within a range at no cost. They are usually portable and handy so you can carry them for outdoor events like ski trips, hunting, and construction sites. They are extremely useful for alerting someone in case you are injured on the slope, separated from your group/family, lost or other emergencies.

However, finding the best walkie talkies for skiing on your next trip can be frustrating as there are a lot of fake brands and poor-quality products on the market. I’ve also gone through my fair share of unreputable radios while skiing, which is why I decided take a variety of good value brands with me to test them out.

The devices were tested for their range, ease of use, communication, battery lifespan, and water-resistance.

Top 5 Walkie Talkies for Skiing: Review

#1. Floureon Walkie Talkies

No products found.

I enjoyed using this radio because of its clear sound transmission and long-range. The call quality ensures that you have the best communication even in long distances. Other features include:

  • It provides access to 22 channels, PMR system, FRS and GMRS bands, so you never run out of a free channel to communicate on.
  • The design is impeccable; it is made with environmentally friendly material and is compact. The front view is a backlit LCD so you can easily view the battery status and channel number. At the top of the handset is a built-in LED flashlight that can be used as an emergency torch at night.
  • It supports distances up to 5km in open areas, however, obstructions like buildings, mountains and weather can affect quality communication. One way to solve this is by adjusting the power level to 1 watt.
  • Lastly, the battery is strong and can last 3.5 hours of continuous use after a full charge. It will last 9 hours on standby.

No products found.

Floureon is an impressive walkie talkie, however, while using the device I noticed it was a little hard to navigate on. If you are buying for your kids or elderly ones, you may have to teach them how to change channels and successfully communicate with the radio.

Factors to Consider when a buying walkie talkie for skiing

Knowing the right kind of walkie talkie to buy comes with experience. That means you would have had to go through a lot of bad ones before discovering the best walkie talkies for skiing. Below, I have outlined the factors to watch out for before buying a new walkie talkie for your ski trip. Consider these factors before your purchase to ensure you buy the best walkie talkies for skiing.

  • Range – I cannot stress how important it is that you buy a walkie talkie that allows you to communicate over a distance of at least 3 miles. On ski trips, trees, high mountains, trees and buildings can act as obstructions that lower the range of your radio device. You should, therefore go for a radio that can communicate over a distance of at least a 5 miles. You should find the range specification on the packaging of the walkie-talkie or the specification tab of an online store. One way to improve distance is to adjust the power level of the device (watts).
  • Battery – This is another essential factor to look out for. Walkie talkies either come with built-in batteries that are rechargeable or standard removable batteries (which can be rechargeable or disposable). For walkie-talkies with a built-in rechargeable battery (usually a Li-ion), you will recharge them when the battery is low by plugging into a power source via a USB cable or using a charging base. This means that you will have to wait for the battery to be charged before going back on the slopes, and having no access to your radio – Li-ion batteries tend to last longer than standard AA or AAA alkaline ones.  Standard batteries can be replaced when the battery is low. You can also carry extra batteries along on your trip. Make sure they have a standby of at least 8 to get you through the whole day.
  • Accessories – Belt clips or earpieces? When on a ski trip both of these accessories are important. The belt clip will allow you to hook your device to your belt or trousers enabling you to ski comfortably and without restrictions. Connecting an earpiece or headset also means you do not have to touch or hold your radio before communication. This works really well on VOX enabled walkie talkies.
  • Weather Alert and Emergency features – A storm or heavy snow is not uncommon during a ski trip! Having a radio that informs you of severe weather updates is a great facility, especially if you ski in remote locations. Most radios also have a one-click SOS button that sends a siren sound as notification to people on the same frequency as you are on.
  • Water-resistant – Lastly, the best walkie talkies for skiing should at least be splashproof to prevent damage to your device. Some radios are also waterproof with either an IP67 or IP68 waterproof rating. These types of radio can withstand damage if submerged in water for 30 minutes. If you are unsure of the water-proof rating look for devices made of thick material as they are less likely to get damaged easily.

Iridium 9555 Review

Description

Iridium 9555 Satellite Kit - Factory Unlocked Phone - Retail Packaging (Black)

If your first impression on seeing the handset is of a black rectangular brick, you are in good company with lots of other folks. But this is normal for sat phones. For many reasons, the technology to make smaller sat phones is not here yet.

At about 1lbs and with dimensions of 5.6″ in height x 2.2″ wide x 1.2′” thick, you’ll need large hands to hold it comfortably. Hopefully, you won’t be doing that a lot if you have a carrying case with you.

The antenna, when it’s retracted fully, adds another 1.7″ to the height of the phone. The position of the antenna is not fixed though. To get better reception, it can be swiveled at an angle of 45 degrees in either direction.

At the top of the handset, to the right of the antenna is the on/off button while on the left and right sides of the device are the up/down volume keys and convenience key respectively. The convenience key is the go-to button for turning on the backlight on the display so you can view it in the dark.

The front panel of the phone is where all the action is located. Above the display is the status indicator LED and earpiece. While below the display are the keypad, function and navigation buttons. These include the 2-way Navi-key, right and left soft key, green and red keys for receiving and ending calls, and microphone located at the lower part of the device below the keypad.

The phone comes with three jacks: the headset jack, DC port, and USB port. The latter two ports are located on the left side of the device below the volume buttons while the headset jack is on the right. The jack and ports are covered by rubber flaps to protect the internal component of the phone from dust and water.

The battery pack also doubles as the back cover. You’ll have to remove this cover to have access to the SIM slot.

If you ordered the handset directly from the factory or a reputable vendor, your pack would also include the following:

  • AC Charger and DC Travel Charger
  • International Adapters
  • Hands-free Headset
  • Leather Case
  • 5′ Auxiliary Antenna and Adapter
  • USB Data Cable
  • User Manual
  • Quick Start Guide
  • CD-ROM with Software

Setup

Setting up the phone is very simple. First, you’ll have to insert your SIM and charge the battery before anything else. Insert the SIM in its slot after making sure you follow the orientation as shown in the compartment.

After installing the battery, plug the power adapter into its port. The battery symbol on the LCD will start flashing to indicate that the battery is charging. It takes about 4 hours to fully charge a depleted phone. The battery icon will stop flashing once it is full.

You can now turn on the phone by pressing and holding the power button for about 5 seconds. The phone might ask for a default SIM PIN. The default PIN is 1111. This could be modified to your preferred number later.

You might not see any network at first after powering it. Give the phone some time to locate a network and hook you to it.

Performance

Making calls – The basic operations of the phone are all straightforward and easy to grasp. Before making calls, you have to make sure you are outside and away from tall buildings and trees. And remember to retract the antenna; then give it time to get a fix on the strongest network.

The phone should display ‘Searching for Network’ and a few seconds later, ‘Registered’ when the search is successful.

If it takes too long to search and register, that could be because it was left too long inside a building with the power on. If that happens, switch it off and turn it back on to accelerate the search and register process.

Enter the recipient’s full number with the country code when dialing. Then press the green key to make the call. To end the call, press the red key.

You might want to cut down on the stress of always inputting numbers by storing the numbers in the memory. Next time you want to make a call it simply a matter of recalling a specific number using the menu prompts. The phone has enough space to store up to 100 numbers with entries for names, multiple numbers, and notes.

If you are in a remote location, expect that sometimes the network might be poor and you could get cut off. That said, the audio during voice calls are clear with no noticeable delay.

Display – The 1.7″ monochrome display is not awesome, at least in the context of the types we get on even budget smartphones. However, you’ll be able to view stuff clearly on it. For instance, the battery level icon and network strength meter can be seen clearly on the upper right and upper left corners of the display respectively.

The date and time are also displayed immediately the phone locates and hooks a network. Softkey labels can be seen on the bottom line of the display. And in poor light conditions, the backlight evenly distributes the light ensuring users can still view the display without having to squint.

Battery – The 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery will last about 4 hours if the phone is used non-stop. On standby, it can go a whole day with some juice still left. Considering that people usually spend just a few minutes on calls, that 4 hours talk time is quite a lot.

Conclusion

The Iridium 9555 satellite phone is a reliable gadget without any bells and whistles. It is compact, simple to use, and portable. It works as best as can be expected when the network is strong and steady. It can make and receive calls and SMS text messages among other basic features.

Because it works over the Iridium network of satellites, it has worldwide coverage. But areas near the North and South poles have stronger network access. Notwithstanding, this coverage makes it a great communication device in very remote areas in any part of the globe.
